Introducing Birth Mantras

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

I remember the nervousness I felt as an expectant mother. The first time around it was the sheer unknown that kept me awake wondering how I’d get through the birth of my daughter. With my son it was the fear that his birth would be drastically different than my daughter’s because I felt like her birth went so well.

Every birth is different and I prepared for their births differently too. With each pregnancy I latched on (ha ha!) to a few phrases or ideas that helped calm my fears and empower me. With my daughter’s birth it was something my wonderful doula said to me about birth being both work and rest. That made a big impact on me. There was another phrase she mentioned about labor being rhythmic and that really made me feel like if I could find the rhythm, I’d get through labor. With my son I found comfort in reminding myself that women have been birthing for generations and generations. Women were laboring all over the world with me at the same time.

Many of these thoughts were incorporated into the Birth Mantras cards – our newest product at mama mantras. This set of 16 birth mantras is perfect for preparing for birth. The mantras help alleviate worries and empower expecting mothers. It’s a bit like having your doctor/midwife, doula, mom, best friend and husband all rolled up into one. These are the phrases that will get you through the worries and then, during labor, the things you’ll repeat to yourself over and over as you birth your new baby.

The Birth Mantras are available now. Get them for yourself, pregnant friends or, if you’re a midwife or doula, for your clients.

Featured Mantra – week of 10/18

Monday, October 18th, 2010

This is one of my favorite mantras in our parenting card set, mostly because it always make me giggle a little.

Let me set the scene a little bit:
I work from home 3 days a week, and occasionally, I’m flying on my own, no helper for the kids and a full-time job to attend to. Needless to say, it can get a little hectic from time to time. Throw in some brotherly love (read: fighting) between my sons and this mama can get downright exhausted and testy. Quickly.

When I get to that point, this mantra always comes to mind. It’s OK to set my boys up with a safe, fun activity for a few minutes and steal away to the bathroom. (Moms get to pee too, right?) I can use that time to get a few deep breaths, collect myself and formulate a plan for getting through the next few hours. While I’m in there, I’ll flip through my mama mantras cards to get a little more inspiration to help me be the best mom I can, and still survive the day.

A mama mantras moment

Monday, October 11th, 2010

It was 8 am. I was standing at our front window, waiting for our wonderful nanny to get to the house so I could go into work early for a Very Important Client Meeting. I was unprepared for that meeting, and banking on a few extra minutes in the office to make up for the work I didn’t do the night before.

8:10 – where was she? It’s not like her to be late. I started to panic. Ernest had already left for work, leaving me with both kiddos and no backup plan.

8:15. Still no nanny. I was totally freaking out. Frantic. Panicking. She wasn’t answering her phone and I had no plan B. I don’t have anyone to call a save the day. Thankfully, Ernest was able to turn around (he pulling into his work) and come back. Meanwhile, I was IMing my coworkers, apologizing for the delay, and barely holding it together with the kids.

It was at that moment that I realized I needed something. Something to tell me that it not a big deal; that sometimes crazy things happen and you just have to roll with the punches. Enter mama mantras™.

We developed mama mantras™ for situations just like this. As moms, we often find ourselves needing a moment – maybe the kids are crying, work is busy, and you need to get dinner on the table. You need a moment to refocus, to take a breath and gather yourself. For us, we often seek refuge in the bathroom, often the only remaining place around with any privacy.

These mantras are for those moments. Instead of just staring at yourself in the mirror, questioning all the decisions you made in the last year or so, pull out a mama mantras™ card. We hope it will help you open that door and face the rest of your day.

Each set of mama mantras™ contains 16 cards and comes in a high quality slide-top tin that is small enough to fit in your purse or pocket.

By the way, it turns out that entire situation was my fault. I never told Martha, our nanny, that I needed her early. She was in the shower when I called her. I completely dropped the ball.

But the thing is, everything turned out OK. Martha and Ernest forgave me. I got to work in time to prepare for the meeting. We created mama mantras to help provide just that type of insight when in the midst of tough situations. I really could have used one that day!

Do you sometimes find yourself in a similar situation? Pick up your own set of mama mantras today!
